You live several states away, and your mother’s house has been sitting empty. You are not going to fly back six times to meet a realtor, a cleaner, a hauler, and whoever else needs to be there. You are not going to spend your one vacation week deciding what to do with decades of belongings. Here is how we handled exactly that situation for a family this year.
The situation
The M.S. family came to us earlier this year. Three adult children, none of them living in Illinois. Their mother had lived in her Quincy home for nearly four decades. The house needed to be emptied, cleaned, and sold, and they needed it done without making the same trip half a dozen times.
Where we started
We started where we always start with an out-of-state family: a photo and video walk-through on a call. We went through the rooms together and marked every item as sentimental, donate, sell, or haul. The siblings made those decisions together, from their own kitchens, without standing in their mother’s house with grief on top of every choice.
What we handled
The sort, room by room
Donation pickups and haul-away
The estate sale of what had value
Cleaning and preparing the property to show
Connecting the family with a buyer we know in town when speed mattered
How it ended
The property sold quickly. None of the three siblings had to fly back for the cleanout or the closing. One phone call replaced eight, and the family who came to Quincy for the funeral did not have to come back for the house.
Why the video walk-through matters
The hardest part of handling a parent’s home from far away is often the picture in your head: standing in the kitchen alone, deciding what to keep, walking out for the last time. For most out-of-state families we work with, that picture never comes true the way they feared. The drawers get sorted on a video call. The keepsakes ship before the cleanout starts. The last walk through the empty house happens on a phone screen, with us standing in the doorway.
It is still hard. We are not selling easy. But you do not have to carry all of it alone, and you do not have to be in Illinois to get it done right.
How we work
One coordinator, one written plan, one written quote. From the first video call to the keys handed over, one point of contact runs the whole thing. We finish through closing day.
